Holmes Okechukwu Awa, is a visual storyteller from Lagos, Nigeria. A storyteller at heart, he began his craft in motion pictures by studying cinematography in Cape Town and has recently transitioned to storytelling in photography.
Though he first picked up a dusty old film camera to capture images, the pictures he takes today are nothing short of spectacular. His images tell tales of everyday life; the small things we miss while we are busy being busy. Sometimes, if you just remove the noise you can find the beautiful simplicities of life.
He expresses this through the black and white images he takes and exhibits a culture and habit of finding beauty in a colourless world. But this is not his limit, he also explores life's contrasts with double exposure images, landscapes, architecture, and intimate portraits.
The process of storytelling has always been regarded as a spiritual one. The storyteller might even go through a trance that elevates their creativity. This could be translated as a meditative state that gives the story a meaningful depth. Many times, it is not just the final product that gives gratification, but the steps leading to it that are just as gratifying. As a film photographer, Holmes takes a more conscious approach when taking photos. In comparison to digital photography where you can capture an image as many times as your battery allows you, when capturing an image on film, he invests a great deal of precision and meticulousness, "It's a good day if I get ONE good shot", he says.
This is not where it ends. He adds another step in creating his art by taking the time to develop the images himself, in his bathroom which transforms into a make-shift photo-lab.
Holmes' photographs are the product of a meditative trance that he disappears into, blocking out this fast-paced world finding peace and beauty in making time stand still, just for a moment. He captures the evidence of magic in a world we overlook every day.
