Secret Sunrise. Secret Sunset.
I was late coming to the party. I have always loved sunrises and sunsets and when I found out I could celebrate the rising of the sun in my own way with music and with people who equally appreciate this moment, I was intrigued. It sounded too “hipster” for my liking by the friend who told me about it. But I am game to try almost anything at least once. And so, sans judgement, I dragged my cousin, a medical doctor coming off an all-night shift to the venue. We were there at 05h45 – the sun waits for no one.
My first clue that I was going to enjoy myself was the neon coloured noise cancelling wireless headphones I was handed once I had shown them my ticket. As soon as I donned the headphones, the world around me was blocked out and gentle music seemed to float around me.
I was on an incredible stage, behind me was Table Mountain, in front of me the Atlantic Seaboard with The Waterfront laid out in front of me, and flanking my right, The Helderberg Mountains. Because I love mountains, I knew whatever happened next, I was going to truly enjoy the experience.
Around me, people from all walks of life, and of all ages were milling around, not quite making eye contact. It was too early in the morning. I was grinning, I could not help it, it was exhilarating to be in the fresh air so early in the morning waiting in anticipation for SOMETHING to happen!
At 6am… a soothing voice welcomed us to the venue (The Noon Gun in Cape Town), and our guided meditation as an ode to the sun begun... it lasted an hour. I use the term meditation loosely… it was a dance extravaganza, soothing, yet energetic, a celebration of movement, of life, an awaking of the spirit. It was spiritual, other worldly, earthly, and fun.
It was a truly magical moment when the sun came up over the horizon, and with music in my ears, warmth on my skin, rhythm in my feet and holding on tightly to my cousin, I shed tears at the beauty of it all. When I looked around me, everyone had paused in their dancing and we were collectively acknowledging the spectacle that was the rising of the majestic sun. A few moments later, it was all over, the music stopped and with smiles on our faces, high fives all round and hugs we left the mountain and this wonderful stage and went off to greet the new day.
